Jr Canes 18U AA Win JSAP Tournament

The Jim Sapikowski Memorial Tournament started in 2005 as the Carolina Invitational Hockey Tournament. The tournament name was changed to the James Sapikowski Memorial Tournament after May 2005 when Coach Sapikowski and his wife Alison passed away.

The inaugural tournament invited teams from surrounding states, including Kennesaw State University, the University of South Carolina, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.  According to Coach Sapikowski, these teams "represented ACHA and Division II and III at its finest."  He believed that it would help to bring a spotlight on collegiate hockey to a part of the country where hockey is growing in popularity, but has had limited exposure.  He further envisioned the tournament as “a regional celebration of collegiate hockey, aimed at bringing talented teams together for a few days each year that would not otherwise play each other.”

This year, the 18U AA team received a late invitiation as one of the college teams dropped out. The tournament consisted of 6 teams, each team playing a 3 game round robin. This year the tournament consisted of the following teams:

Christopher Newport University

Duke University

Elon University

Carolina Jr Canes 18U

East Carolina University

University of North Carolina

The Jr Canes won thier intial two games vs Duke and Elon while UNC also won thier first two games vs Christopher Newport and East Carolina.

As luck would have it, The Canes and UNC would play in the final game of the weekend,  with the victor winning the tournament.

The Jr Canes emerged victorious by a tight score of 2-1 in an extremely hard fought battle.

Jr Canes were honored to be considered for this invitation and we extend a heartfelt thank you to UNC for a great weekend!!

15U AA/A Veteran's Cup Champs

Carolina Jr. Canes U15 AA/A Go Undefeated on Way to 9-2 Rout in Pittsburgh Veteran's Cup Championship

The Carolina Jr. Hurricanes traveled to Pittsburgh this past weekend to take part in the Steel City Series-Veteran's Cup Tournament.  The Jr. Canes went into the championship game undefeated after Round Robin wins against The Black Co. 2-0, a nail biter win with 30 seconds left against the Mesa AZ Ice 2-1, and a decisive 4-0 win against an extremely physical Pittsburgh Predators team.  The boys were definitely ready for a rematch with the Predators and faced them in the championship, scoring 3 in the first period and an impressive 6 goals in 9 minutes during the 2nd period.  It was a great team effort led by an extremely creative coaching staff that only had 11 skaters to work with during the final game.

Go Canes!

Jr Canes Squirt A Red Finalists!

Junior Hurricanes Squirt A Red ---------- Bring home the SILVER from Pittsburgh, PA
November  2018

The Squirt A Red team had a great showing this past weekend while competing in their first tournament of the season at the Steel City Veterans Cup in Pittsburgh, PA.   The team played hard all weekend with 3 wins and 1 tie game rising to First Place in regular play and advancing to the Championship Game on Sunday!   Sunday was a "nail-bitter" keeping everyone on the edge of their seats and in a close game, the team brought home the Silver with a 2:1 final score.   We are proud of the teams accomplishments and look forward to lots more hockey to come this season!

Go Jr. Hurricanes!!

For those of you that I haven’t had the opportunity to meet yet my name is Kris Kenney and I am the Program Director for Hurricanes Sled Hockey. I work hand in hand with Joe Ribar, Kelly Jacoby and Brian Jacoby to give those in the community with a physical disability the opportunity to play ice (sled) hockey

We are excited to be a part of the best hockey family in NC the JR Hurricanes and wanted to share with you our main fundraiser.

The money raised pays for ice, travel and equipment expense. We travel to 5-6 tournaments a year and send youth players to play tournaments with other programs working towards a full youth trace team. We support disabled youth, adults, military both active duty and veterans. Consider attending, bidding on auction items or donating to our program. Ask anyone who has attended our event in the past a great time is had by all.

Thank you in advance for your support and LET’S GO CANES!
